Although digital living room has been coming for several years, it has not become mainstream so far. There are very few people who are living in anything close to the digital living room today. However, I think now the time starts to be right to go mainstream as most of the technology and software has matured enough. Unfortunately, main media player vendors have confused the market with various standards and offerings. Frankly, consumers are confused what to buy or which software to install.
The good news is that you should not be too conserned about what to buy at this stage. To my mind technology is important, but it does not create your media experience as such. E.g. you could be able to create decent media experience with your existing devices, if you know how to combine them properly with each other. To simplify this task, I have created a 5 dimension framework which describes the key dimensions to my media experience.
The key areas which you should take into account to enhance your media experience are as follows:

1. Connect – Create wireless home network, connect the devices together and hide the clutter
2. Play – Choose a home theatre computer that fits to your living room design
3. Entertain – Choose the right software to create a platform for digital entertainment
4. Control – Control your media player with ease on your sofa
5. Share – Store and share the media over the home network and internet
In practice this framework means that you should not place your decisions regarding your digital living room, simply based on one dimension, but you need to take the complete picture into account on every decission on the way. For example, selecting media player in the “Play” dimension will have influence on options available in the “Entertain”, “Control” and “Share” dimensions.
The following articles will discuss how to utilize this framework in practice in building your digital living room.
