Google Reader Play is a good news reader for those who have their computer in the living room and occasionally browse news from their TV. Google Reader Play is a new Reader feature that allows you to view rss feeds in a HDTV friendly way. The user interface is simple and font size is large enough to be viewed from a sofa. It is a perfect 10-foot viewing experience from your sofa.
Recommended Items feature helps to get started without a setup
Reader Play is also a good starting point for those who have not used Google Reader before. There’s no set-up required as you can simply view recommended feeds from different categories. Reader Play uses the same recommended items technology as the normal Reader to suggest interesting feeds.
Suggested feeds seem to fit well to my interest areas as the recommendations are based on my other rss feeds in the google reader. The obvious downside is that I cannot directly view only those feeds I have subscribed in the google reader. Fortunately, there is a way to show your own subscribed rss feeds in the Reader Play, but it needs you to go to the standard Reader interface first.
Tip: View your own feeds in Reader Play
If you have certain feed categories in the Google Reader, you can display feeds from those categories in the Reader Play by selecting “View in Reader Play” from the folder settings menu. After doing this once, you can e.g. save the custom feed URL to your favorites so that you can easily access your latest feeds using the Reader Play interface. Alternatively, you can select All Items feed from the Reader and view all your feeds in the Reader Play.
After testing the Reader Play for some time, I am happy to say that this nice little tool is very suitable for the living room usage and is the first good news reader user interface for 10-foot experience with your HDTV.
