How to Control HTPC Media Center with iPod Touch Or iPhone

How to Control HTPC Media Center with iPod Touch Or iPhone

Generally, we are used to control TV by pressing remote control’s buttons to navigate a menu on TV. Touchscreen type of devices such as iPhone and iPod Touch will completely change the way how we control TV as the touchscreen allows us to see the menu on remote instead of only on TV. Another benefit is that you do not need a line-of-sight operation when you have a wireless network.

Based on my experience, the following three applications are the ones I have found useful when controlling computer with the iPod Touch.

Apple Remote
If you want to play music or watch movies, Apple’s Remote app is like having your computer’s iTunes library inside iPhone/iPod but you use your tv and speakers to play video and music. I strongly recommend testing this if you have not already.

VLC Remote
If you don’t use iTunes to manage your music and/or movies you can play videos with VLC Remote. VLC Remote works in a similar way to Apple’s Remote app and it can easily detect network hard drives in addition to your computer. It can play both music and video files. The benefit over iTunes is that it supports a lot more video formats.

RowMote
This one is only for Mac users. If you want to control media center software such as FrontRow or Plex, rowmote is very handy. It can even act as a mouse and keyboard, so if you need to type or search something you can simply turn to built in keyboard.
