There are many good HD camcorders for recording HD video and increasing alternatives for sharing HD video files to friends and family. YouTube has also started to offer the possibility to share HD video, but there is another service called Vimeo that has been around longer. I have been sharing some HD videos through Vimeo and find it as an excellent service to share HD video files. The biggest benefit of the service is that it is able to play high quality videos even on a slower PC.
The steps to publish video are really simple.
0. Record HD video
1. Convert video files as MOV,MP4 or WMV HD
2. Upload files to Vimeo and add the descriptions
3. Protect files with a password to ensure only selected people can see your home videos
4. Share the link via email
You can upload up to 500MB per week, 1 HD video per week, no HD embedding, and basic player customization. While this is not for serious video sharing, it should be enough for basic video sharing to friends and family. You can also subscribe to Vimeo Plus service the get more space for your HD videos. The great thing about this service is that the HD video seems to play smoothly even on slower computers. This can be a concern with some services such as Apple’s Mobile Me, which requires a lot faster computer on the receiving side.
Should you share HD video with this service over YouTube? The quality of the HD video appears to be better quality and if you want to share the HD video with the public, the community is more supportive. I recommend to give it a try if you have some good quality HD video content that you want to share with friends and family.
If you do not have a video camera yet and looking to get started, I would recommend the HD camera I have. I have had Sony HD Camcorder for 1.5 years and have been extremely satisfied with it.
