Why
I have been using Synology DS209+ Network Hard Drive with two one terabyte hard drives. Synology works well on both PC and Mac environments. In Mac OSX, you can also use Synology as a Time Machine, but backing up is very easy on Windows software as well. I like that Synology shuts down the hard drives after certain time of inactivity and turns them on when ever I need to search data from the hard drive. It is extremely easy to setup and map map different folders on Windows environment with their Synology Assistant. Another useful feature is the iTunes server functionality which means you can stream your iTunes music to any other computer with iTunes directly from the network hard drive.
Pros
- Easy and quick setup
- Very fast data transfer read/write speeds
- Automatic stand-by mode
- Additional features such as iTunes server, photo station, download station
Cons
- Can overheat and shutdown e.g. inside TV bench
- Quite expensive investment
As a summary I have been very satisfied with this reliable Network Hard Drive. As your video collection grows larger, you should not rely on single external hard drive backups, but RAID 1 type of mirroring is strongly recommended. This ensures that you always have additional backup, if one of the backup hard drives fails. Similarly this provides convenience as you do not need to delete all the time source videos when doing video editing as you can store video files to a larger capacity network hard drive.
