Thinkflood Redeye Infrared Remote for iPhone or iPod Touch

We have previously featured some top apps for iPhone and iPod Touch to control your home theater PC. One challenge with these applications has been that you have not been able to control other infrared devices such as A/V receiver. A recent reader question hinted about Redeye remote control system by Thinkflood that allows you to turn iPhone or iPod Touch into an all-in-one remote control.

The Redeye remote control system sends the wifi signal from iPhone to the RedEye device that converts them as infrared signals to control your home theater devices. This extends the usage of iPhone remote control from computer applications to other equipments as well. I can see this particularly useful if you want to control the volume on the A/V receiver at the same time when controlling media center software on your HTPC.

The Redeye remote costs $188, so it is around the same price level as e.g. Logitech Harmony remote controls. Before purchasing the Redeye remote control system, it might be useful to try cheaper iPhone apps such as RowMote or Hipporemote to see if controlling media center using iPhone is your cup of tea. Not all feel comfortable about controlling the media center with iPhone as there is some time lag before the remote control is fully operational. In practice this means that you need to open the remote app and connect to the wifi network before being able to send out the remote commands. Some users might find it frustrating as they are used to have remote control immediately available when they take it into their hands.

Without going deeper into the subject, this tip is to help you get familiar with this product so that you can start finding more information about it if you got interested. Have a look at the following YouTube video demonstrating the Redeye remote control system in practice.
